- Learn new skills to help you to feel confident to deliver any outdoor learning session using a range of different tools and techniques in a curriculum context. You will learn from demonstrations by trained LJMU staff and activities that will allow you to put into action the skills you have learned. These skills will include: Introduction to use and maintenance of tools (peelers/knives for whittling, hammers, mallets, trowels and forks, bowsaws, mallets, loppers and secateurs), Introduction to basic knots and use of knots for attaching to structures and trees (overhand knot and half hitch, lashing and frapping techniques to make frames, cow hitch and bowline knots), Use of a range of frames for shelters including A-frame, tripod, tipi and lean-to, Use of fire and fire safety including using fire strikers to spark a flame and light a piece of cotton wool, Make use of fire for cooking/setting up tripod over fire (use of Dutch oven, griddle, fire gloves) to cook a range of food including soups, pizza, popcorn, wraps and simple cakes/sweet treats.
